Stuart Snow has been taking his Z1 and PowerShell with him since 2015 on long distance hiking trips. He hiked the 500 mile Colorado Trail in 2015. In September 2017, he is planning on hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. We asked him how he managed his battery recharging on the trail.

This is what he said,

“1. You go into town every 50 miles or so (3-5 days) to resupply. Occasionally you stay over night to shower and wash clothes. Otherwise you spend 3-5 hours relaxing in a restaurant.

2. I spoke with my ENT doctor. He set the pressure on the CPAP at the lowest pressure he felt would be therapeutic to conserve the battery. This actually supplied me enough support to sleep well. (Note: Always consult with your physician on changes to your prescription. They are required to set the pressure)

3. I always fell asleep without the CPAP on. I’d wake up shortly after that and put on the CPAP. I also turned the CPAP off as soon as I woke up in the morning. I probably ran the CPAP for 6-7 hours a night, but probably slept in total 7-8 hours.

4. I had two batteries. Using steps 2-3 I could get between 2 an 2.5 nights per battery. Easily 4 and sometimes 5 full nights on two batteries.

5. Whenever I hit town I had two rechargers and first thing I’d do was start recharging. 4 hours in a restaurant, with two batteries recharging, and I was in good shape for another 3-4 nights. With the occasional overnight in a hotel to fully recharge, I was able to use the CPAP every night of the trip.”
